It is entitled Play #39 June. It is copyrighted in 1929 the year of the
great depression and also 1937. This signifies that there is an earlier
series that was also printed. This was an incentive posters for children
during the depression. This one reads "Play and get Mother and Dad
to join in, Its good for ALL of you!", an incentive for good parenting
during tough times. Baseball is the theme in this poster printed
during the FDR Roosevelt Works Progress Administration years.

NOTE: A wonderful "stock" poster in that a magician hand lettered his name,
"Duncan the Hypnotist" in the space provided for that purpose. It is hand lettered
and colored red, not printed. This poster was printed as a stock poster and anyone
could add their own name in the space provided at top. We wish we knew more
about Duncan, the poster was found in eatern pennsylvania. The scenes are
of early Hypnotherapy, hypnotism with an illusionistic depiction. A finely printed

bottom edge margin, unobtrusive unless scrutinized.
NOTE: Harper’s Magazine was first created in June 1850 by the book
publishing firm Harper & Brothers. The earliest issues consisted largely of
published England material and soon after, the magazine printed the work
of American artists and writers. One of those artists was Edward Penfield,
well known designer of this poster. Penfield was born 1866 and died in1925.
In 1894 he produced a series of monthly images for Harper's magazine.
His style was influenced by Japanese prints, hand-craftsmanship of the
Arts and Crafts movement, and the impressionistic approach of Parisian poster making.
His signature is not printed on this sports poster, although it is a wonderful example of his work.

a poem written by James' brother. The rumor that she had a sister named "Ura"
is an urban legend.This political tobacco poster acts as a wonderful piece of Amercian

NOTE: Lippincott's Monthly Magazine is a 19th century literary magazine, published from 1886
to 1915 in Philadelphia. It was published as Lippincott's Magazine from 1881-1885. It was also known
as Lippincott's Magazine of Literature, Science and Education from 1868-1871, and Lippincott's
magazine of popular literature and science from 1871-1885. It published literary criticism,
original work, general articles, and advertisements. Although he studied in Paris,
William Carqueville was from Chicago and spent most of his life there. He founded his own
lithographic press there and designed posters for Lippincott's as well as other American
literary magazines. His style was influenced by another excellent American poster artist,
Edward Penfield. Literary posters can be framed very simply or very elegantly to match any

elegant illustration style. Lippincott's Monthly Magazine is a 19th century literary magazine,
published from 1886 to 1915 in Philadelphia. Although he studied in Paris,

would be beautiful framed, Arts and crafts style. NOTE: Elisha Brown Bird was a well known
illustrator of book plates and magazines during the 1890's. He was known for his Art Nouveau
style as seen here in this poster, which was designed for a promotional for The Century magazine.
The Century Magazine was a monthly popular magazine published in the 19th and 20th centuries.
It began publication in 1881, as a successor to Scribner's Monthly Magazine. It ceased
publication in 1930. The small print states articles in the magazine about Elder Dumas
by Emily Crawford Paris Correspondance of the London Daily News and The New York
Tribune, John Randolph of Roanoke, Ways and Means in Arid America by W.E. Smythe,
Sir George Tressady by Mrs Humphry Ward, Stamping out the London Slums,
On the Track of the Arkansas Traveler, Life at Napoleon's Court by Prof. William M Sloane
other contrabutions from Stedman, Harrison, Woodrow Wilson, Hamilton, Vibert and
many others. In very small print "Sold here price 35 cents published by The Century Co. New York."

NOTE: Harper’s Magazine was first created in June 1850, by the book publishing firm Harper & Brothers.
The first press run of 7,500 copies sold out immediately, and within six months circulation reached 50,000.
The earliest issues consisted largely of material from England and soon after, the work of American artists and writers.
Edward Penfield the designer of this poster. His signature varies throughout time and can be seen here
printed in the plate at the top right of the poster. Penfield was born 1866 and died in 1925.
In 1894 he produced a series of monthly images for Harper's magazine. His style was influenced by Japanese prints,
the the hand-craftsmanship of the Arts and Crafts movement, the impressionistic approach of Parisian poster-making.
This poster is a wonderful example of American culture. To give you an example of what was included in
1897 January' s issue of Harper Magazine this
poster advertises some of the the topics , " The January number contains White man's Africa, by Poultney Bigelow.
The Martian by Du Maurier, Farce by W.D. Howells. Short stories, by Miss Wilkins, Brander Mathews,
and E.A. Alexander. Science at the begining of the Century, Illustrated Literary Landmarks of Rome,
by Laurence Hutten. etc etc. It depicts a beautiful litho
image of an 1897 man reading books by electricity or electric light.

CONDITION: A, Linen Mounted
NOTE: The signature printed in the printers plate of this smaller poster is of JC Leyendecker,
a well known illustrator. Joseph Christian Leyendecker was born in 1874 in Germany and
emigrated with his parents and younger brother Frank, to America in 1882.
He was part of the generation that included Howard Chandler Christy , James Montgomery Flagg,
Maxfield Parrish, and Aubrey Beardsley. Leyendecker enjoyed a long,
productive career. This poster was designed in his early years as a designer. In 1896 he won a
Century Magazine cover competition that brought his work to international notice. This led to cover
assignments to other national magazines. He did all twelve of Inland Printers' covers for the year of 1897.

c. 1900 British Victorian Country Girl Musical Play Theater Poster

CONDITION: A, Linen Mounted, BEAUTIFUL!
NOTE: This is an early theatre poster from the early 1900's. It is printed with
a fine lithographic technique and advertises a play called "A Country Girl."
Wiki article on this play: A Country Girl, or, Town and Country is a musical play in two
acts by James T. Tanner, with lyrics by Adrian Ross, additional lyrics by Percy Greenbank,
music by Lionel Monckton and additional songs by Paul Rubens. It opened at
Daly's Theatre in London, managed by George Edwardes, on 18 January 1902
and ran for 729 performances, which was the fourth longest run for any piece of
musical theatre up to that time. It starred Hayden Coffin, Bertram Wallis, Evie Greene,
Huntley Wright, Lilian Eldeé, Topsy Sinden, Ethyl Irving and Rutland Barrington.
Gertie Millar and Isabel Jay joined the cast later. The show also enjoyed a Broadway run,
starring Melville Stewart, and later tours. This was Lionel Monckton's first score as
principal composer, and his songs included "Molly the Marchioness", "Try Again, Johnny",
and "Under the Deodar". This is a rare and stunning English poster. in stunning condition.

CONDITION: A-, Linen Mounted, some very minor wear, unobtrusive unless scrutinized
NOTE: This wonderful medical tonic poster is a good example of early brewerey
and medical advertising. Here we see a medical treatment made of malt and hopps,
advertising that "Health is Wealth", a campain for the C.L Centlivre Brewing Company
of Fort Wayne Indiana. This product "Builds up the system gives strength and
enjoyment to life", it is a Malt Hopps Extract.
The border is of gold printing. The red cross is worn by the nurse depicted
in this poster.The printing is fine. We are fortunate to have this smaller poster
in our collection as an interesting piece of Amercan medicine advertising.

NOTE: This smaller sized American Advertising Poster entitled "Wax Dressing"
advertises a product for waxing floors. The color of the poster is a deep navy blue,
not black as it appears in scan. The photo transfer image at center, is of a small turn
of the last century child with the script under her written "A child can use it." It has beautiful
victorian era American typography text and the product sold for 25 cents a bottle.
Scarce, we have never had or seen this poster before. The wax dressing was for hard
and soft fwooden floors, pianos, bars, hotels, stores, offices, halls, churches as well
as private houses. A great early historical Philadelphia PA related American Advertising piece,
all ready for framing.
